My name is Zoraida and I live in Spain. I was diagnosed with MCS two years ago, but I had been having reactions for a couple of years before that. Everything escalated suddenly in 2014, and this was when I began to need a mask for everyday life. There have been many other changes in addition to the mask. Among them, moving to a smaller, less polluted town.
My safety kit:
– A filtering mask for most situations. It consists of a thick activated-charcoal filter that lasts a few months, and a cotton casing that can be changed whenever needed. I have several casings, some of them home-made.
– A half-face respirator with powerful filters for places where the air is even worse.
– Sunglasses and a cap, because I am sensitive to sunlight
– I don’t need it now, but I used to carry a sun-blocking umbrella too
How do I wear all these?
I don’t need a mask at home or in my car because they are controlled environments, but I use one in almost any other place.
My basic protection is the cotton casing + charcoal insert mask. I have it always around my neck, and I use it to cover my face whenever I need it. This means almost all the time, as tobacco smoke, exhaust fumes, perfumes, fabric softeners, scented cleaning products, and of course, stronger chemicals all cause adverse health effects.
The respirator is in my backpack, just in case the smaller mask is not enough. I need it in some closed spaces, if they have been painted or renovated, or if they are recently cleaned or disinfected, or if air “fresheners” are used.
I also wear my respirator in any crowded place, when there is a concentration of all the scents emitted by cosmetic and fabric-care products. And I’ve needed it even in the country, if herbicides or pesticides were sprayed.
So you see, it’s a lot of fun!!
