‘Conceptual Breakthrough’ Regarding the Chemicals We’re Stewing In

This is BIG news in the everyday chemicals and human health research front!

This explains what many of us who have MCS/ES experience – we can feel these processes as they occur, we don’t have to wait for the cancer that will kill us if we don’t get away from the exposures and find tools to heal the already occurring damage.

‘Conceptual breakthrough’

“This is the first time scientists have figured out how widespread this is, and how many different layers of machinery within the cells themselves are being impacted by these chemicals.”

.

“We found definite evidence that chemicals that are unavoidable in the environment can produce a wide range of low-dose effects that are directly related to carcinogenesis. So the way we’ve been testing chemical safety is really quite out-of-date.”

“Every day we are exposed to an environmental ‘chemical soup’ and we need testing to evaluate the effects of our ongoing exposure to the mixtures in this soup.”

~ William Goodson III, a senior scientist at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

“This research backs up the idea that chemicals not considered harmful by themselves are combining and accumulating in our bodies to trigger cancer and might lie behind the global cancer epidemic we are witnessing.

~ Cancer Biologist Dr Hemad Yasaei from Brunel University London

.

This would be all kinds of everyday chemicals, such as those that trigger MCS – they included chemicals found in items such as mobile phones, detergents and cooking pans, and pesticides used on fruits and vegetables!

Getting to Know Cancer

The selected ‘chemical disruptors’ that induce genome instability include chemicals that not only directly damage DNA or cause mutations, but act indirectly, via pathways such as DNA damage signaling, DNA repair, epigenetic regulation or mitochondrial function.

UPI: Chemicals considered safe alone may trigger cancer in combination

Safe chemicals combine in air to form mixtures that can cause cancer.

“This research backs up the idea that chemicals not considered harmful by themselves are combining and accumulating in our bodies to trigger cancer and might lie behind the global cancer epidemic we are witnessing,” said Dr. Hemad Yasaei, a cancer biologist at Brunel University London

William Goodson III, a senior scientist at the California Pacific Medical Center, said the results of the studies show not only that chemicals safe on their own are combining in the air to form mixtures that can cause cancer, but that the way chemicals are tested for safety needs to be changed.

Science Daily: Cocktail of common chemicals may trigger cancer

Fifty chemicals the public is exposed to on a daily basis may trigger cancer when combined

“This research backs up the idea that chemicals not considered harmful by themselves are combining and accumulating in our bodies to trigger cancer and might lie behind the global cancer epidemic we are witnessing. We urgently need to focus more resources to research the effect of low dose exposure to mixtures of chemicals in the food we eat, air we breathe and water we drink.”

The same week the above mentioned research was released, the Canadian Cancer Society released an unrelated report… They seem oblivious to the harm chemical exposures are causing, or they would have had a 4th recommendation to eliminate harmful chemicals from everyday products and materials.

.

Every single hour about 22 Canadians hear the words “I’m sorry, you have cancer,” joining the more than 810,000 people across the country already living with the disease. One of every 4 of us can expect to die from cancer, making it Canada’s leading cause
of death.

Cancer cases are projected to climb 40% over the next 15 years as our population grows and ages, according to the recently published 2015 Canadian Cancer Statistics. This will create a potentially devastating burden on families, healthcare providers and our country’s economy. Cancer already costs Canadians more than $17 billion per year

Over the past decade, health policy has been pushed to the margins of the national agenda. Canadians’ real-world health concerns don’t receive the same attention or priority they once did.

Cancer touches too many lives, takes too great a toll and is too intertwined with other health issues to be dealt with in isolation from a bigger picture health agenda.

Without clear national objectives and the commitment to provide long-term, dedicated funding, there is a growing risk that the most fundamental health research will be crowded out by a federal innovation agenda skewed toward short-term commercial interests.

Ottawa’s preference for short-term funding commitments leads to inefficiencies. On-again, off-again funding cycles force researchers to spend more time ramping up and shutting down projects and less time running them. The repeated search for funding support, qualified staff and appropriate facilities can all end up costing time,
money and progress

.
Recommendation 1
Reduce tobacco use by adopting plain packaging rules and replacing the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy with a comprehensive and properly
funded plan.

Recommendation 2
Guarantee in federal legislation the right of all Canadians to affordable, high-quality palliative care.

Recommendation 3
Research: commit to long-term investments in health research that keep up with rising costs and population growth and are delivered through simple, streamlined funding programs that maximize the impact of every dollar

There was no mention of how 24/7 exposure to toxic chemicals in everyday products and materials, and wireless radiation are now definitively linked to causing cancers, and how so many cancers would be preventable if the chemical and wireless industries were regulated.

Those research reports both came out on the same day this happened in the USA:

House Chemicals Bill Favors Industry Over Families

Ken Cook, EWG’s president and cofounder, said:

American citizens expect chemicals in commerce to be safe, but they know that, far too often, this is not the case. Congress has neglected the problem of dangerous chemicals in consumer products for decades, to the great benefit of chemical industry profits. American families have waited far too long for a strong regulatory program that aggressively protects their children’s health and safety from toxic chemicals. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, at least 1000 toxic chemicals deserve immediate attention. And we need assurance that the most dangerous chemicals will be regulated or banned in a timely manner. We commend the House for its focus on the need to overhaul chemical policy, but this piece of legislation will not do the job. It tips much too far in favor of an industry in serious need of regulation.

Andy Igrejas, Director at Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, wrote this comprehensive piece about chemical regulation (or lack thereof) in the US, and what the details and differences are between the different efforts:

The House Passes TSCA Reform!

Also, the COMING CLEAN Workgroup for Public Policy Reform has put together a page of expert opinions about the current chemical policy reform efforts:

Federal Chemical Policy / TSCA Reform

Note that most of this post was originally written in late June of 2015. I was hoping there would be more media attention and discussion around the chemical cocktail /health effects issue to add here, but sadly, most media chose to ignore it.

I was also hoping to be more eloquently able to tie in how this specifically relates to MCS/ES, but my “thinking brain” was taken out of commission by massive pesticide spraying that was done to “control” the wild parsnip that had been allowed to spread in the entire Ottawa Valley region in the summer, so I will just repeat a few quotes (from above) here:

“Fifty chemicals the public is exposed to on a daily basis may trigger cancer when combined

“This research backs up the idea that chemicals not considered harmful by themselves are combining and accumulating in our bodies to trigger cancer and might lie behind the global cancer epidemic we are witnessing,”

This is the first time scientists have figured out how widespread this is, and how many different layers of machinery within the cells themselves are being impacted by these chemicals.”

The selected ‘chemical disruptors’ that induce genome instability include chemicals that not only directly damage DNA or cause mutations, but act indirectly, via pathways such as DNA damage signaling, DNA repair, epigenetic regulation or mitochondrial function.

We all need to work together in whatever way we can to make sure health and well-being become policy priorities, or future generations are at serious risk.

#1 in my mind: Don’t vote for those who support the right to pollute for profit!

In the current system, polluters are being protected while so many of us are losing our lives. This is not the world we should be leaving our children and grandchildren.

Polluting people and the environment we all depend on for life
should NOT be profitable

Let’s stop the epidemic of cancer and other health problems  in their tracks!

Demand toxic chemicals be banned from everyday products and materials!

Let’s make the right to a healthy environment a reality!

  1. When I see all the millions or billions of dollars being raised to “fight” cancer — I always say a prayer that at some point someone is going to use some of that money to educate people about the effects of toxic chemicals on their bodies and how the US government is not protecting us from the toxic stew of chemicals that is present in the air and water and soil..

  2. If these very eminent people are privy to this information why oh why are they not shouting it from the rooftops. Why are question’s not asked in various countries government. Why are the people responsible for these findings not making themselves heard. Surly, more should be done to protect mankind. The statistics speak for themselves. My uncle died 2 weeks ago. He was a painter and decorator all his life. The doctor suggested that it could have been the paint. He died of cancer. My neighbour died of throat cancer recently she was only a cleaner. It may have been the chemicals in the products that she used. Is this what we want for our children grandchildren

    • It’s not that they aren’t trying to shout it from the rooftops, it’s that the media aren’t listening – they make their money advertising the products that are filled with the chemicals that are causing cancer and so many other chronic illnesses these days

  3. Here’s a fascinating interview with Leroy Lowe, the man who put the Getting to Know Cancer project together.
